This small bronze medal portraying Pietro Vettori the Younger, a Florentine scholar, was made by Gaspare Romanelli sometime between the mid-16th to early 17th century. The level of detail achieved in this cast bronze is remarkable. Notice the crispness of the lettering, the fine texture of Vettori’s hair and beard, and the intricate folds of his clothing. The artist would have created a wax model, carefully carving all these details in reverse. This model was then used to create a mold, into which molten bronze was poured. The striking surface of this medal invites us to consider the value that was placed on skill and artistry during the Renaissance. This medal reflects a society where the ability to manipulate materials with precision was highly esteemed. It is a testament to the enduring appeal of expertly crafted objects, which continues to resonate with us today.
