This collection of photographs, "Leprozenkolonie Danaradja: diverse onderwerpen", was made by an anonymous artist, offering a glimpse into a leprosy colony. I imagine the photographer carefully framing each shot, a series of distinct moments arranged on a single surface. What was it like to capture these images? The starkness of the subject matter and the intimate glimpse into this closed world is so striking. It feels so voyeuristic, but then again, it is also informative. The sepia tones evoke a sense of distance, the dark background emphasizing the images as fragments of a larger narrative. Each photo hints at stories of community, labor, and resilience. The photographer is in conversation with the people in this colony and, even though we do not know the story, as viewers, we are now too. The act of looking becomes an act of empathy.
