This ornamented letter D was made by an anonymous artist using woodcut on paper. The process of woodcutting involves carving an image into a block of wood, inking the surface, and then pressing paper against it to create a print. The material itself, wood, lends a particular character to the design. The artist would have needed sharp tools to carefully remove the wood around the design, leaving the letter and its embellishments raised to catch the ink. Notice the contrast between the solid black lines and the untouched white paper, which gives the letter a bold, graphic quality. This was a labor-intensive process. Each letter would have been individually carved, demanding a high degree of skill and precision. The technique was integral to the wider world of printing, a key technology in the early modern period. Considering the amount of work involved, this initial may have been part of a larger series, intended for mass production and consumption. It challenges our typical notions of art as unique and precious.
