Paul Signac made this watercolor of fishing boats in Venice, and you can see how he’s thinking through the process of painting. The way he approaches the marks, they’re immediate and kind of searching, like he’s trying to find the essence of the scene. Look at how the reflections in the water are rendered, with these quick, almost scribbled lines. It's not about perfect representation, but about capturing a feeling, the shimmer and movement of the water. The paint is thin, translucent, allowing the paper to breathe, and there’s a real lightness to the touch. Those masts, they're not just lines; they're little stabs into the paper. I love how Signac isn't afraid to leave things unresolved. It reminds me a bit of some of Whistler's nocturnes, where it's all about mood and suggestion rather than detail. Art, for me, it’s about embracing ambiguity and letting the viewer fill in the blanks.
