Jozef Israëls sketched this interior scene with pen and ink, capturing a boy seated at a table. Note the row of spherical objects lining the top of the wall, these orbs carry a peculiar weight. Throughout art history, the orb has been used as a symbol of completeness, and divine power. Think of the orb and sceptre of royal portraits, symbols of sovereignty and cosmic order. Even earlier, in ancient Roman art, rows of circular forms adorned temple friezes, suggesting a connection between the earthly and the celestial. Here, the orbs appear domesticated, lining the walls of a modest home; their symbolic weight shifts from the divine to something more intimate. One cannot help but consider how these simple shapes resonate with a primal sense of security, like the cyclical nature of days, months, years... The way these forms have shifted, evolved, and resurfaced across history, is a reminder of how symbols carry collective memory, subconsciously shaping our experience of art.
