Karl Wiener made this collage called ‘Depotabteilung’ using paper and pencil. What I like about this piece is the way he's not precious with his materials; it's all about process, a kind of playful investigation. There's so much to unpack here! The layering of different textures and colours creates this chaotic yet harmonious whole. The collage elements and the sketchy lines create a tension, like a conversation between control and freedom. That red shape, almost like a little house, anchors the whole piece, doesn't it? Its simplicity amidst all the chaos draws me in every time. It reminds me a little of Kurt Schwitters' collages, with that same sense of Dadaist energy. But Wiener brings something unique, a certain rawness. To me, this piece isn't about answers; it's about the joy of looking, questioning, and getting lost in the process.
