David Michael Hinnebusch painted 'Time Pop', using bright acrylics and ink to conjure a world of playful possibility. I see him layering blocks of color like juicy slabs, juxtaposed with frantic pen lines, a real dance of intention and accident. The purple figure seems caught in a moment of transformation, maybe she’s dancing, maybe she’s falling, who knows? There's a kind of raw energy in the way Hinnebusch attacks the surface, like he’s wrestling with the ghosts of de Kooning and Guston, and trying to find his own voice amidst the echoes of the past. It makes me think about the act of painting as a conversation across time, where artists riff off one another, stealing licks and phrases, and turning them into something new. Each gesture feels like a question, a proposition, an invitation to look again, and maybe see the world a little differently.
