This fashion plate was made in 1784 by Pierre Adrien Le Beau and it presents a fashionable woman, poised in contemplation. Most striking are the large ribbons adorning her hat, symbols of frivolity and status during the late 18th century. Consider these ribbons—decorative, yet powerful markers of identity. They echo the draped fabrics of classical sculpture, recalling the garments of ancient goddesses. Yet, they also anticipate the flamboyant excesses of later eras, such as the oversized bows of the Victorian period. Ribbons, in their essence, are about connection and adornment. Like threads in the tapestry of time, they resurface, evolve, and take on new meanings in different contexts. These symbols engage viewers on a deep, subconscious level, where collective memory and subconscious processes affect their interpretation.
