Louis III de Bourbon, prins af Condé
Listen to curator's interpretation
Curatorial notes
This engraving of Louis III de Bourbon, Prince of Condé, was created by Matthias Zündt. Notice how the oval composition contains the Prince. Zündt's graphic style features precise linework and delicate hatching to model forms and create depth. The visual impact is one of austere authority. Observe, too, how the prince is seated in profile, holding a crown, a potent symbol of power. This symbol is repeated with a second crown floating above his head. The composition is not merely a representation of the Prince but also a carefully constructed statement about lineage and authority. The use of line and form suggests the rigidity of social structures and the weight of expectation placed upon figures of high status. It reminds us that portraiture is as much about constructing an image as it is about capturing a likeness.
