Etienne Picart created this delicate drawing, depicting 'Christus verschijnt aan Maria Magdalena', using graphite and possibly some ink. The artist’s skill is evident in the way he coaxes volume from the graphite, building up tonal contrasts. The texture of the building is particularly interesting; Picart seems intent on capturing its weathered surfaces. We can imagine him using a finely pointed piece of graphite, almost like a needle, to capture the rough surface. It is also worth noting that Picart was mainly an engraver, and he probably made this drawing in preparation for a print. Here, drawing becomes a means to an end, a step in a much longer process of reproduction. It can thus be seen in connection with the rise of capitalism, and the means of production. By considering the drawing in terms of its material, we are invited to consider the nature of its making, too, which has the effect of democratizing our view of art.
