Curatorial notes

Hendrik Spilman made this print of Teteringen Church in 1732. It's an etching, a medium that allowed for the relatively easy reproduction of images, fitting for the rise of a print market in the 18th-century Dutch Republic. The church dominates the composition, a clear symbol of community and stability. Yet, the presence of common folk and grazing sheep in the foreground subtly hints at the social and economic realities of Dutch village life. Spilman, working in an era defined by the long shadow of its Golden Age, provides a glimpse into the prevailing social structures. The church, a traditionally conservative institution, stands as a reminder of the established order. To truly understand this image, we can look into local archives and religious histories, piecing together a richer understanding of the social dynamics at play in Teteringen. In doing so, we reveal how art, like this etching, is always contingent on its social and institutional context.
