This small engraving, "Landscape with a Couple," was made by Jacob van der Heyden in the early 17th century. At first glance, we see a couple in elegant attire within a forest. The man is standing while the woman is sitting. A sleeping figure lies nearby, his sword cast aside. The sword, traditionally a symbol of power and readiness, lies abandoned here. This hints at the abandonment of rational thought in favour of the irrationality of love. This motif resonates with the imagery of the sleeping Hercules, who relinquishes his club for love. Here too, we might recognize the ages-old motif of the ‘Weapons Down’ gesture, symbolising conciliation. Across centuries, this simple yielding, this symbolic gesture of surrender, continues to stir powerful, subconscious emotional responses within us. The theme has resurfaced and evolved through different historical contexts in paintings such as Mars and Venus by Botticelli, where we see Mars unarmed asleep next to Venus. It reflects the cyclical progression of human experiences.
