This invitation and program for the Vereeniging Elckerlyc lecture evening, printed in Amsterdam in 1910, is a real gem. Look at the way the lettering is arranged, almost like a little drawing, all those carefully chosen fonts jammed up next to each other. The black ink is so consistent it almost feels velvety, and the heavy texture of the paper gives it all a satisfying, sturdy feel. I love the way the decorative border crowds the top of the page, it's all so fussy and proper, but there’s also something playful about the mix of text and ornament. This piece reminds me of some of Corita Kent’s screen prints from the 60s, where she’s also riffing on typography and design, using them as building blocks for something totally new and unexpected. For me this kind of work opens up a space where seeing and reading start to blur, where language gets a bit more physical and tactile.
