Maria Bozoky made this work, "Short Day, Long Night" with ink and watercolor on paper. These are quite traditional media, but here they’re used in a manner that feels exploratory, immediate. The washes of watercolor create a foundation of pale blues and grays, over which the ink lines dance. Note how the ink doesn't just describe form, but also creates a sense of restless energy. The lines loop and swirl, suggesting hair, perhaps, or even thoughts. The artist's hand is very evident in the drawing. We can imagine her quickly moving the pen across the surface, capturing a fleeting impression. The title "Short Day, Long Night" hints at a state of unease, perhaps even anxiety. The looseness of the ink and the fluidity of the watercolor contribute to this feeling of a mind in motion, grappling with the passage of time. Bozoky invites us to consider the artistic process itself as a way of understanding emotional experience.
