Dramatic memory 1974

Rudolf Láng made this print, Dramatic Memory, at some point in his life. The image feels like it's emerging slowly. It has a ghostly atmosphere. The palette is very restricted, mostly shades of brown and blue, but the artist makes the most of it. Look how Láng uses the ink to create different textures. See the dress of the woman? It's got all these details, but it's also kind of blurry. The way the dog is rendered is different again, and the background feels very abstract. This variety suggests Láng was really exploring what he could do with the materials, pushing them to their limit. It reminds me a little of Paula Rego's etchings, which also have this eerie, dreamlike quality and that same interest in storytelling, but through a very personal lens.
