Jackson Pollock made this painting, "Number 1, 1950 (Lavender Mist)" with oil, enamel, and aluminum paint on canvas. The layering of different materials is so central to how I experience the painting. Looking at it, it’s not just about the colors, but how they sit on the surface, almost suspended in time. You can see Pollock’s process, the way he moved around the canvas, dripping and flinging paint. There's a real physicality to it all. Take a look at the upper right corner, see how the black lines are laid over a pale lavender shade. There’s a tension there, a conversation between chaos and control. Pollock’s work always reminds me of Joan Mitchell, another painter who wasn’t afraid to make a mess, and embraced the idea that a painting could be a record of an action, a performance, rather than a picture of something else. It's about seeing the world in a new way, one drip at a time.
