Maria bij het slapende Christuskind
Listen to curator's interpretation
Curatorial notes
This is Guillaume Vallet's engraving "Maria bij het slapende Christuskind." The composition invites a serene contemplation, structured around the tender image of Mary watching over the sleeping Christ Child. Vallet masterfully employs chiaroscuro to model the figures. The lines create a dynamic interplay of light and shadow, evoking a soft, intimate atmosphere. Mary’s gaze, directed downwards, and the delicate folds of fabric, serve to draw our attention to the vulnerable figure of the child. Notice how the formal arrangement – Mary as the stable vertical form and Jesus as the horizontal resting form – creates a visual language that speaks to both divine protection and human fragility. The landscape in the background adds a layer of depth, contrasting the serene foreground with nature's raw elements, subtly destabilizing any straightforward interpretation. Vallet’s formal choices function as a discourse on care and vulnerability. By studying these formal aspects we can better understand the artistic and philosophical environment in which it was made, while recognizing its lasting influence.
