Angela Bulloch made this listening station, featuring a record player and primary colors, without us knowing exactly when. Bulloch, like me, is thinking about process. She wants us to know how the thing is put together. The colors are pure and unmixed, almost aggressive in their directness. Look at the blue stand. The structure is simplified, just a box hanging off the wall. The wires spill out. The yellow screen is interesting because it isn't flat. It curls like a drawing. The texture is tactile. It invites you to touch it. This isn’t a painting, but the same principles apply. Color, texture, form, and how they all come together to create an experience. I am reminded of the work of Jessica Stockholder, who also uses simple, bright colors and found objects to create installations that blur the lines between painting and sculpture. But Bulloch brings in the added element of sound. She makes art that makes music a physical, spatial thing.
