This piece, "Is any cozened of a tear Which as pearl disdain does wear," was made by Eleanor Fortescue-Brickdale, but we don’t know exactly when. The soft watercolour palette, along with the Pre-Raphaelite treatment of nature, make this piece seem like a medieval daydream. An angel with rainbow wings is held captive in the stocks. It’s as if Fortescue-Brickdale is asking us to consider how the imagination can be imprisoned. The angel's red feet are such a striking contrast to the muted palette, and I can almost feel the tickle of the grass between my own toes. The feathered treatment of the foliage and grass in the foreground evokes the feeling of a tapestry. I wonder what William Morris would have made of it? Fortescue-Brickdale seems to suggest that there is a kind of freedom that can only be found in captivity.
