This study was made by Willem Witsen, a Dutch artist who lived from 1860 to 1923. The Rijksmuseum holds this work, as well as numerous other pieces by Witsen. Witsen, who came from a wealthy family, was a key figure in the Amsterdam Impressionism movement. This movement arose in the late 19th century, a time when the Netherlands was experiencing rapid social and economic changes, including industrialization and urbanization. The art world, traditionally dominated by academic styles, was being challenged by new ideas about what art could and should be. Artists like Witsen began to focus on everyday subjects. Witsen had strong ties to literary and artistic circles, becoming friends with prominent writers and artists of his time. As a student, he was known for his rebellious attitude toward the art establishment and for his involvement in social and political causes. To fully appreciate Witsen's work, it’s helpful to consider his place within a network of artists, writers, and intellectuals, all responding to a changing world. Exploring archives and letters can reveal a richer understanding of his artistic intentions.
