Ludwig Büsinck’s ‘Apostle Matthew’ presents us with a deeply human vision of the divine. Matthew is depicted not in triumphant glory, but absorbed in the act of writing, his brow furrowed, illuminated by the halo of divine inspiration. Consider the halo itself, a symbol that transcends Christianity, appearing in various forms across cultures, from ancient sun deities to enlightened figures in Eastern traditions. It signifies a radiance, an aura of the sacred. Yet, here, it is but a simple ring, a subtle indicator of Matthew’s elevated status, almost eclipsed by his concentration. Note also the pen in his hand. It is not merely an instrument of writing, but a conduit for the divine word. In Christian art, the act of writing is often depicted as a sacred activity, reflecting not only the transmission of knowledge but also a direct connection to divine wisdom. This image reflects the tension between the human and the divine.
