This napkin ring design was made on paper by Mathieu Lauweriks around 1911. What strikes me is the handmade-ness of the grid, it's wonky, uneven. The whole drawing feels like a process. Lauweriks seems to be thinking through form as he draws. Look at the graphic quality of the design: a solid line looping around. I love the way the lines taper to points, like ink bleeding into paper. It's so simple, but so bold. The design is a jumping-off point, a chance to play with geometry and think about the object in space. It reminds me of the work of Hilma af Klint, who was exploring similar ideas around the same time. Art isn't just about the finished product, it's about the messy, imperfect process of getting there.
