Editor: So, this is Gerd Winner's "Underground Station Hallesches Tor". It's a black and white print that really emphasizes the geometric forms of the architecture. What stands out to you about the materials and the way they are represented? Curator: What strikes me is the reproduction itself. Winner chose printmaking, a medium rooted in mass production, to depict this public space. How does the choice of this reproducible medium affect your understanding of the uniqueness or value of the station itself? Editor: That's interesting. It makes me think about the everyday and the accessibility of this place. I had never considered how printing can frame even monumental sites as things that are made and distributed. Curator: Exactly! It prompts us to consider the labor and industrial processes behind both the construction of the U-Bahn and the creation of the artwork depicting it. Editor: That is a new way of looking at the material conditions that affect the built environment and art. Thanks!
