This is Studie 247A, made by Hans Hinterreiter in 1950. It looks like it was made with colored inks, and perhaps gouache? Either way, it's a game of shape and color. The colors are muted, almost earthy. And the way the shapes lock together reminds me of a puzzle. Look closely, and you'll see that the shapes aren't perfect. There's a bit of wobble and imperfection that gives the whole thing a handmade feel. Check out the way the colors bleed slightly at the edges of the shapes - a deep ochre, a sky blue, a rust red. It's not about perfection but about the joy of playing with color and form. Thinking about it, it reminds me of the work of Hilma af Klint, or even some of the Bauhaus artists, folks interested in how geometry and color can create a sense of harmony and balance. It's a beautiful thing, this little study!
