Alfio Giuffrida made "Verpflanzungen Exp8" with what looks like precise lines and flat planes of colour. It's like he's using paint to build an image, piece by piece, which is what painting is all about, really. The painting is full of these everyday objects, but they’re arranged in a way that’s not quite how you’d find them in the world. I love how Giuffrida renders them with such clean lines, almost like a technical drawing, but then fills them in with these slightly off-kilter colours. Take the frying pans, for example, supporting this whole collection of objects, the red and black creating a solid base. And then there’s the way he balances the composition with colour, using jolts of yellows and purples to pull your eye around. It reminds me a little bit of some of Léger's paintings, with their machine-like forms and bold colours. But Giuffrida makes it his own thing, a playful take on how we see and organize the things around us.
