This is a photograph of a church in Aix-les-Bains, taken by Delizy. It’s small, sepia toned, like a memory. I imagine Delizy setting up their camera, maybe under a cloth, squinting at the scene. Did they feel a connection to the architecture, to the solid, aged presence of the church? Or was it more about capturing a moment, the light, the way the trees framed the building? The textures are beautiful. The rough stone of the church wall against the smooth faces of the clock tower. It’s all subtle, quiet. I wonder how the artist decided on the composition. What did they want to emphasize? Perhaps the way the old sits alongside the new, or the contrast between the natural and the man-made. Delizy’s photograph reminds us that every artist is in dialogue with what has come before.
