Curatorial notes

Curator: This is Jan Glauber's "Classical Landscape with Two Men in the Foreground, Right." Editor: It feels so still, almost dreamlike, despite the intricate details. The cross-hatching gives a wonderful sense of depth. Curator: Landscape prints like this were quite popular. Glauber’s choices, the classical architecture and the inclusion of figures, invites a re-examination of the hierarchies present within artistic production. Who are these figures and what is their relationship to the landscape? Editor: The texture of the rocks is fascinating! The artist uses a really complex layering of lines. I am curious about the role of printmaking and how it democratized access to landscape imagery. Curator: Exactly! This work really speaks to the tension between idealized landscapes and the social realities of the time, especially when you consider the power dynamics at play. Editor: It makes me think about the craft, and how printmaking allowed for a wider distribution of such idealized views. A real tension between art and industry. Curator: Yes, and through this lens, we can really question whose stories are being told and for whom. Editor: I'll definitely look at this print differently now, considering both the image and its production.
