Curator: Here we have William Holman Hunt's "Portrait of Mrs Edith Holman Hunt." It's undated but probably around 1880. Editor: The softness of the lines and the pastel colors give it a gentle, almost ethereal feel, don't you think? Curator: Absolutely. But it also speaks to the Victorian ideals of womanhood, almost like a saintly figure. Editor: I see your point, but I wonder if it's also a very personal rendering, far from those idealized portraits. Her gaze is so direct. Curator: Perhaps a bit of both? It's a tender and vulnerable portrayal, isn't it? It leaves you pondering her inner life. Editor: Yes, exactly! This portrait does invite such intimate speculation.

Edith Holman Hunt was the artist’s second wife, the sister of his first wife Fanny. It was a union prohibited under British law, and the couple had been forced to marry on the Continent.
