Twee banken en een stoel

Curatorial notes
Léon Laroche created ‘Twee banken en een stoel’ to show designs for furniture. The print, titled "Le Garde-Meuble," evokes the culture of opulence and aristocratic life of the 18th and 19th centuries. These furnishings, with their delicate lines and gilded accents, reflect the period's emphasis on luxury. In many ways, these chairs and couches would have been status symbols for the patriarchy. They were undoubtedly reserved for a select few, embodying the deep class divisions of the era. The elegance and ornamentation also offered a stark contrast to the era’s strict social norms. Furniture like this acted as a backdrop where men and women navigated the complexities of courtship, gender roles, and social expectation. These pieces offer us a view into the decorative arts and the social rituals of the time. It bridges art, design, and history, inviting you to reflect on the stories that furniture tells about us.
