This print of a chaise longue was made by Léon Laroche, using delicate lines and subtle colors. It depicts a very fancy seat. I can almost feel Laroche’s hand moving so precisely and with so much intention when he drew this. He must have been thinking about line quality, making each one count, to capture the curves and ornamentation of the chair. The pale pinks and creams of the textile contrast with the gilded wood, and the repeating diamond pattern gives it a certain order and grace. This work reminds me a little of other French artists that use the technique of drawing to create prints like Jacques Callot. There’s a feeling of luxury and refinement, but also the simple pleasure of rendering a beautiful object. It’s like Laroche is inviting us to slow down and appreciate the artistry and craft that goes into creating a beautiful seat.
