Joseph Binder made this graphic image, called 'New Beginnings', in the mid-twentieth century, and it strikes me as a picture built from simple shapes. It's so interesting how the process is evident; you can see each distinct plane and the way colors are assigned without blending. The artwork is primarily composed of flat, bold colors which are separated by strong outlines, giving it a stained-glass feel. It’s very graphic. Look at how the water is formed of tessellating blue and green shapes, echoing the rainbow above, or the dove of peace placed at the center. Every area is distinct and given equal weight. This flattened perspective brings a symbolic quality to the image. It reminds me a little of Stuart Davis in its graphic strength, its bold use of line and color. Both artists share a commitment to capturing the dynamism of the modern world. Like all good art, it invites multiple interpretations and reflections.
