This fashion plate by J. Ebel from 1921 seems to me like it's trying to catch a certain fleeting feeling! It's probably made with stencils—these flat planes of color, like the bold red ground, feel very much like shapes laid down one by one. There is a limited palette with the girl's bright blue eyes in contrast with the red, and the monochrome hat with some kind of bow. I wonder if it was Camille Roger's hat or whether they designed it. You can imagine the artist thinking about how to capture the latest fashions for the magazine. The way the dark lines of the hat cut across the face is kind of daring. I bet other artists at the time were looking at what Ebel was up to. We all look at each other, you know? We lift ideas, expand, and respond. It’s all one big conversation. These artists are in touch with each other across time.
