This print, La Jeune Fille aux Joues Roses, was made by J. Ebel for the Gazette du Bon Ton in 1921, and it's all about capturing a mood through deliberate choices. The texture is super flat, almost like paper cutouts layered on top of each other. Look at how the hat brim and dress are built from these crisp black and white stripes - so graphic, so intentional. And then there's that saturated red background throwing the pale skin tones into high relief. It's a bold move and it really works. But the magic, for me, is in the asymmetrical face. That vertical line dividing her lips… what's that about? This tiny touch destabilizes the whole image. It pushes against the perfection, reminding us that art is alive because of its little imperfections and strange questions. Like, why does one cheek get all the blush? It's playful like Man Ray, but also has a knowing quality about it - a hint of melancholy. It's what makes this piece stick with you, long after you've moved on.
