Note how the artist plays with light and shadow to sculpt the figures, creating volume. Editor: The figures are fascinating! What is the structural importance of the man kneeling at the lower left? Curator: Good eye! That figure, with his posture of supplication, creates a crucial visual anchor, a low point from which the eye is led upward, following the gazes and gestures of the other figures. It reinforces a pyramidal composition which guides the viewer to the key moment, the laying on of hands. Do you notice anything else about the arrangement of the figures and how they relate to the architectural framework? Editor: I see that the figures fill almost all of the image plane! It feels crowded, and somehow that gives the moment a heightened emotional feeling. Curator: Indeed!
