Curatorial notes
This is Jean Le Pautre’s etching, 'Schenkkan met twee gevleugelde paarden', made with delicate lines on metal. The eye is drawn into a complex composition. A grotesque vase comes to life, adorned with figures of winged horses, foliage, and cherubic forms. The detailed craftsmanship suggests both opulence and whimsy. Lepautre skillfully uses the etching technique to create texture and depth. The density of lines varies to create a sense of light and shadow, lending a sculptural quality to the design. This elaborate object, set against a serene landscape, invites a contemplation of the relationship between artifice and nature. The vase, with its multiple symbolic figures, can be understood through structuralist lenses. The motifs create a visual language that speaks to the values and aesthetics of its time. This piece is an excellent example of how design destabilizes the boundary between the functional and the purely ornamental.
