Mathieu Lauweriks made this design for a napkin ring with pencil and watercolor. Look at the way he's built up the image, layer by layer, as if he's feeling his way forward. It’s artmaking as a process, right there on the page. The black stripes, applied with loose brushstrokes, have a real physicality; they almost seem to ripple. Then there's the central blue stone. It's not just a flat wash of color; it has depth, luminosity. I can almost feel the cool smoothness of it. The delicate gold filigree that wraps around the stone, it’s like a tiny dance. This piece reminds me a bit of some of Hilma af Klint's design work, that same combination of geometric structure and intuitive mark-making. It’s about seeing the world in new ways, and embracing the beauty of imperfection.
