Jacques Van Gingelen created "Twee studies van figuren en dieren" in 1825 using pen and ink. Van Gingelen lived through a period of great political upheaval in Europe, including the Napoleonic Wars and subsequent restoration of monarchies. These studies offer a glimpse into the artist's observational skills. In the top sketch, the figures are depicted as a collective, pointing towards a common goal, perhaps reflecting the social dynamics of his time. Note how these figures contrast with the helmets and sleeping dogs below. The helmets, symbols of authority and conflict, are rendered as mere outlines, devoid of the power they represent. The dogs, often symbols of loyalty, are shown at rest, perhaps hinting at a longing for peace. These sketches offer a personal reflection on the societal structures and values of Van Gingelen’s era. They invite us to consider the human and animal dimensions of power, conflict, and the search for peace.
