Curatorial notes

This photograph titled, *Isabel Wachenheimer rond een tobbe met een onbekend meisje, juli-augustus 1933, Hamburg*, was taken by an unknown member of the Wachenheimer family. In it, we see two young girls, one in a dress, the other in a bathing suit, playing outside next to a metal tub, during the summer of 1933. Captured as the Nazi regime rose to power in Germany, the photograph speaks to the complexities of daily life for Jewish families at the time. It brings forth questions about identity, safety, and the attempt to maintain normalcy amid growing threats. The innocence of childhood is poignantly juxtaposed with the looming danger, as Jewish people's existence was increasingly criminalized. What are we to make of the photo's insistence on documenting a common, domestic scene? It is a heartbreaking, yet humanizing glimpse into a family's attempt to hold onto joy as the world around them darkened.
