This photograph of Isabel Wachenheimer and an unknown girl, was taken by a member of the Wachenheimer family in their garden, in the United States in June, 1958. The colour palette is warm and inviting with the greens and browns of the garden offsetting the cooler tones in the subjects clothing. There is a pleasing formality to this composition, something familiar in the history of portraiture, and yet the snapshot aesthetic introduces the possibility of chance, the slightly blurry focus, the off-centre framing. The photograph has faded, adding to its mystery. You can almost smell the grass, feel the sun on your skin. It is a record of a specific moment, but also an evocation of something far bigger, the eternal cycle of youth, the seasons, and our relationship to nature. Photographs like this, invite comparison with the work of artists like Nan Goldin, photographers interested in exploring the everyday, celebrating the beauty and complexity of human connection. Like all good art, this photograph encourages us to embrace ambiguity.
