This baseball card of McBride, Washington, from the American League, was made for the American Tobacco Company. Look closely, and you see it's a world made up of tiny dots, carefully arranged. It reminds me how every artwork is built, bit by bit, choice by choice. I'm drawn to the way the green background buzzes. It’s not flat, it’s alive with a sort of pixelated energy. The white uniform, tinged with shadows, looks almost sculpted, and the “W” on the sleeve is a solid presence. The texture gives the image a tactile feel, like you could reach out and touch the fabric of the jersey. This card feels like a conversation with other graphic images such as Warhol’s prints. Like any good art, it leaves room for us to wonder and dream.
