Here's Henry Nielsen’s landscape, it’s an image of hills made with dark ink, probably in the early 1930s, judging by the artist's lifespan. When I look at this, I can almost feel the artist digging into the block, trying to carve out what he sees. It’s such a contrast of light and shadow, you know? A few strokes become a whole field, a sky full of clouds. I can almost feel the physicality of the process, like each cut is a thought made visible. I imagine Nielsen, maybe a bit restless, wanting to capture the essence of the landscape with just a few simple marks. Did he want to capture the feeling of the wind? The stillness of the hills? It looks like he might be influenced by the German Expressionists. Anyway, it’s amazing how much emotion can be packed into such a small piece. This reminds us that making art is an exchange. Artists build on each other's visions, each one contributing to this evolving conversation across time. Ultimately, painting is an expression. There’s no right or wrong way to feel when you look at a piece of art. It’s whatever it stirs up in you!
