Joshua Flint made "Future Present" as an oil painting, and from the looks of it, he worked at night. There's this moody, atmospheric vibe created with dark blues and greens, punctuated by strange, luminescent orbs. I can imagine him layering the paint, wiping it away, and then adding more, building up this hazy, dreamlike scene. The figure on the bicycle is so mysterious, almost ghostlike. The floating orbs add to the uncanny feeling, and I wonder if Flint was thinking about technology, or maybe even about science fiction. It's funny because, in a way, all paintings are science fiction. They're about creating worlds, and I think Flint is tapping into something primal here, this fascination with the unknown. Like other artists, he is not just representing what he sees, but inventing new ways of seeing. In that spirit, all artists are in conversation with each other, across time and space.
