Alice Rahon’s ‘Next Morning’ is an oil on canvas artwork, and feels like peering into a dream. The paint is applied in thin layers, creating this luminous, watery atmosphere, where everything seems to float and shimmer. Look at the way the blues and greens blend, almost like watercolour, and how the forms of buildings and trees emerge from this misty space. There’s a real sense of looking at something just beyond our grasp, something remembered or imagined. I’m drawn to that cluster of small trees near the bottom - tiny vertical marks that feel so fragile and exposed against the vastness of the scene. They remind me of Cy Twombly's work, where simple gestures create such a powerful sense of space and emotion. Rahon’s painting invites us to embrace ambiguity, to let go of our need for clear answers, and to simply revel in the beauty and mystery of the unknown.
