Robert Nanteuil created this engraving of Emmanuel-Théodose de La Tour d'Auvergne, cardinal de Bouillon, a prominent figure in the French court during the 17th century. Nanteuil, as an artist, was favored by the court and was known for his skill in capturing the likeness and status of his subjects. The portrait gives us insight into the hierarchical structure of the French society. Bouillon's title, dress and the prominent emblem reflect his place as a member of both the aristocracy and the church. The work shows the importance of family lineage and religious authority in the construction of identity and power. It's hard to ignore how carefully constructed this image is. The Cardinal’s gaze and the elaborate details of his attire seem to invite us into the world of power and influence, all the while reminding us of the structures that governed identity and opportunity in that era.
