Eugen Klein made this photograph, ‘Mensen van Javaanse oorsprong,’ with a camera and printing process lost to time. The grayscale shades suggest a world rendered in tones of memory. Look at the arrangement – it’s so formal, so posed, yet there’s something deeply intimate about it. I can only imagine Klein trying to connect with his subjects, coaxing them into a composition. What was it like for them, these people of Javanese origin, to be subjects of the colonial gaze? The texture in the folds of their clothing, the weariness in their eyes – it all speaks volumes. I wonder about the weight of that umbrella, the burden of motherhood, the innocence of childhood, all captured in a moment. Klein and other artists are having a conversation across time, aren’t they? And ultimately, there’s no fixed reading of this. It’s open, like all great art, to endless interpretation.
