This bound album of prints was created by Jean Claude Richard, Abbé de Saint-Non, during a time of significant social and intellectual change in Europe. The prints reflect the religious and historical narratives prevalent in the 18th century. Notice the central figure of the monk kneeling, his face upturned in an expression of fervent devotion. Hovering above him are celestial figures, including the Virgin Mary and cherubic angels. This composition invites us to consider the role of religious faith in shaping personal identity and societal values of the time. The image also presents a clear visual hierarchy, with the male figure occupying a lower plane than the ethereal beings above, reinforcing traditional gender roles and power dynamics within the Church. How does this depiction reflect the experiences and identities of those both included and excluded from these religious narratives? This work compels us to reflect on the interplay between faith, representation, and societal norms.
