Simon Poelenburg made this print, Elegant gezelschap aan gedekte tafel, using etching techniques. The image is entirely dependent on the linear quality of the etched line, built up to create tone and texture. Consider the labour involved in creating such a scene, a world of elegant leisure. It is made visible only through the intense labour of the printmaker. It's a reminder that images, then as now, were made available to a wide audience through the skilled work of artisans. We can also consider the status of printmaking at this time. Often considered 'low art', it was in fact an important means of circulating images and ideas. This print offers insight into the complex interweaving of art, labour, and social life in the early modern period. By looking closely at materials and modes of production, we can challenge traditional distinctions between fine art and craft, and gain a deeper understanding of the image's cultural significance.
