This photograph of Corry Goelst and Wilhelmina van Zijll de Jong by an anonymous photographer is a real slice of life. I mean, who were they? Where were they going? What kind of camera did this person use? The photograph is printed in subdued blacks, greys, and whites. The texture, or rather lack of it, in the sky is really interesting to me. It’s almost like one of those washed-out monochromes Richter did. The high contrast of the ladies’ dresses and the tyres next to the sky makes you think about the material aspects of the work: the surface sheen of the car versus the soft fuzziness of their hats. It all comes down to the physicality of the medium, that grainy analog feel. You know, like a Hopper painting. But a photograph. But here, the mystery and ambiguity are part of the charm. It's like an ongoing conversation across time, or a visual poem that invites multiple interpretations.
