Léonor Fini made La Guardiana del Huevo negro with oil on canvas, and what’s so striking is how she's built up the colors in layers. She really understood painting as a process. Looking closely, you can see the way the paint is applied is almost like glazing, with thin, translucent washes, especially in her dress and the cloak. It gives a shimmering, otherworldly feel. The texture is smooth, almost porcelain-like, which emphasizes the dreamlike quality of the scene. Notice the black egg; it's solid, opaque, and feels so weighty against the lightness of the surrounding colors. It’s placed perfectly in the center and makes you wonder what it means. Fini reminds me of Remedios Varo in her magical symbolism and love of the uncanny, but there's a theatrical drama that feels unique to Fini’s vision. It’s not about answers, just a space to imagine.
