Adrianus Eversen made this view of a fortified building using watercolor on paper in the 19th century. Eversen's application of watercolor is quite thin, giving the building an almost ghostly appearance. The washes of color are layered to create subtle variations in tone, suggesting the play of light and shadow on the building's surface. Note the slight running of the pigment down the page which may speak to the speed at which the artwork was completed, or the conditions. The choice of watercolor, a medium often associated with sketching and preliminary studies, lends the image a sense of immediacy. This contrasts with the subject matter, a solid, imposing structure. The rapid application of the technique suggests a process of quick documentation, a capturing of the building's essence in a fleeting moment, a sort of precursor to photography. Ultimately, considering materials, making, and context invites us to reconsider traditional boundaries between fine art and craft, prompting questions about the nature of artistic skill and the value of different forms of creative expression.
