Willem de Haas Hemken made this watercolor and graphite rendering of De Groothoofdspoort in Dordrecht during the late 19th century. Hemken situates us on the street to gaze at the ornate gate, which served as a landmark in Dordrecht's bustling port. As we look at the image, it's important to consider the Netherlands' complex relationship with its waterways; a source of both prosperity and vulnerability. Hemken has chosen to depict the gate from an intimate perspective, in which the gate's imposing architectural details and the adjacent tree take on an emotional resonance. Hemken was known for his ability to capture the subtleties of light and atmosphere, especially in marine settings. Consider the play of light and shadow, the subtle gradations of tone that give depth to the gate and tree, and the emotional aspect of this ordinary scene. Hemken invites us to consider the enduring presence of history within the everyday.
